Liverpool Law Society Law Awards : Our Centre of Excellence being Recognised?
174 Law have been shortlisted for three awards with Liverpool Law Society being Niche Law firm, Dispute Resolution and Family Law. We understand from the law society that a record number of applications were made this year but what made us stand out.
174 Law family Law Departments consist of a wealth of experienced lawyers offering over 100 years combined expertise. The Department covers every aspect of legal advice a separating family may need whether this be divorce, financial or children arrangements irrespective of their means, Together with the complete range of dispute resolution methods be this traditional , collaborative or mediation.
The family team primarily consists of Helen Pittard, Robin Kendall, Kathy Bibby and Eileen Ward. Between them they cover every specialised panel the Law society and Resolution can offer together with LEXCEL and IIP with quality assurance being at the forefront of the service at all times.
The ethos of the Department is to go the extra mile at all times. They regularly undertake pro bono work in order to ensure a client’s interests are secured. Eileen Ward heads legal Aid. With the diminishing availability of legal aid subject to exceptions Eileen’s expert knowledge and experience ensures if a client can get public funding for legal representation she will get it. To ensure vulnerable clients are signposted in the right direction particularly those who are exposed to Domestic Abuse Eileen regularly provides training to professional agencies who support such clients to ensure they are educated on legal aid availability and legal remedies.
Helen Pittard heads Dispute Resolution. She offers the full range of dispute resolution be it traditional mediation or collaborative. Her main practice today is however Mediation having trained in 1997 and being one of the longest standing mediators in the North West. Helen was amongst the first mediators to be recognised by the then Legal Services Commission as an accredited specialist and to obtain a contract to offer publicly funded mediation which 174 law continues to have the privilege to offer in an ever diminishing public funding arena. The objective of the family team being to be able to offer its service to everyone no matter what their background or means.
Helen is accredited by the Law Society, Resolution, and the Family Mediation Council as an advanced accredited specialist in both family law and mediation. She is also qualified to offer child inclusive mediation recognising the importance of the voice of the child being part of a national advisory group to promote future change. This offers a child the ability to participate in mediation and be directly involved in the decision making process of arrangements which impact upon their future. The mediation team can offer facilities in Liverpool, Birkenhead, Bromborough, Chester and Wrexham. However recognising the needs and demands of clients who cannot always travel online mediation provides the ability to cater for this having now provided such mediation on an international basis. Helen also provides consultancy and training services to other mediators to support them in establishing their own practices.
The family team also promotes an interdisciplinary practice recognising that family disputes don’t exist in a vacuum. They recognise the need for independent legal advice and mediation. However they also recognise that family separation solutions are not managed solely by the law. There are many other dynamics which need to be managed. To cater for this they have formed direct links with counsellors and a parenting consultant. They also work closely with Relate who offer in house counselling facilities.
174 Law is a founder partner of the charity “Kids in the middle”. The charity’s sole objective being to fill the current void of providing independent support for children who are being exposed to parental separation. The charity is Internet based with the website first going live in September 2014 providing on line peer mentoring and counselling together with lots of videos and material prepared by children for children. The charity is also seeking partnerships to support the charity working with CAFCASS, Resolution and Relate to name but a few which Helen is currently advocating.
Robin Kendall is on the children’s panel. Rob specialises in representing children’s needs as their guardian within care proceedings. He also regularly represents parents in Public law proceedings. Having been on the panel since inception he is able to bring a wealth of experience to the team as a whole. Rob for many years has worked with the local ethnic minority community promoting advice to the culturally diverse.
The wealth of experience of the team is such that between them they have encountered most legal scenarios and thus being able to cater for the most complex of cases particularly from a financial perspective be it on Divorce, cohabiting couples and increasingly upon Schedule 1 Children Act applications and Child Maintenance. They revel in the most challenging of cases and provide energy and a positive approach to every aspect of the daily working life.
